Before you can support the application, your child or partner must apply for household income-dependent study financing.

When the student applies, they will provide us with your email address so that we can contact you.

You should follow the instructions in the email to support your application online. You should provide us with your details as soon as possible. If you wait too long, the student may not receive all of the student funding needed to begin their studies.

Follow our three easy steps to support an application.

1. Log in or create your student finance account

You will need to create your own account if you don’t already have one.

Do not use the student account to provide us with your information, you must use your own. If you and your partner support your child’s application, your partner will also need to create or log in to their own online account.

If you have already supported an application or have applied for student finance in the past, you should log in to your existing online account. Don’t worry if you’ve forgotten your login details. You can reset these on the login page.

Log in or create an account

2. Tell us your income details

You will be asked to provide us with your social security number to support an application so that we can obtain your income details from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

If you can’t find your Social Security number, download it HMRC App to access it.

We use your household income for the tax year:

  • 2022-23 if you are supporting a student’s application for 2024-2025
  • 2021-22 if you are supporting a student’s application for 2023-2024

We use this tax year because it represents the most current information HMRC applies to everyone.

You must tell us if you have:

  • paid into private pensions
  • made further voluntary contributions
  • Children (other than the student) who are financially dependent on you

If you don’t have a Social Security number, you’ll need to fill out a paper form and provide receipts showing how much you earned.

Don’t send us a P60 instead of giving us your income details.

If you do this and we have not asked for it, the student’s application will take longer to process. This means your child or partner may receive less money than they expected at the start of the course.

What to do if you haven’t received an email from us?

You should still be able to link to the student’s application and provide us with your details online by entering the customer reference number. Follow the instructions in our “How to” guide for help supporting a student finance application with your household income.

You can upload a form to your account instead:

Supporting multiple students

If you support more than one student, you only need to provide us with your details once.

After submitting your information for one student online, click the link in the email we sent to support the second student. We automatically include your data in the application.

If you haven’t received an email for the second student you’re supporting, follow the steps in our guide to get help supporting a student finance application with your household income.

3. After supporting the application

Once you have provided us with your details, it may take 6-8 weeks for us to receive your income HMRC and determine how much the student can get. As soon as we have done this, we will inform the student about it.

If we need anything else from you, we will let you know by email.

Your child or partner can log in to their online account and check the progress of their application.

Learn what to do if your income changes later in the year.
