Warning: Reminder to remain vigilant for security developments

The US Embassy would like to remind US citizens in Egypt of the existing security guidelines. The Embassy is aware of reports of the death of a foreign national killed in an attack in Alexandria, Egypt on May 7, 2024. This incident may be related to recent developments in the Israel-Hamas conflict. Egyptian authorities are continuing to investigate the incident. U.S. citizens are encouraged to monitor local security developments and remain vigilant throughout the country at all times.

The State Department’s current travel advisory for Egypt advises U.S. citizens to reconsider travel due to the risk of terrorist attacks. The Egyptian government regularly addresses security concerns and visibly increases its security presence at prominent locations.

In general, US citizens should avoid areas where large gatherings may occur. Even peaceful demonstrations or events can become confrontational and potentially escalate into violence. U.S. citizens in Egypt are urged to monitor local news reports and plan their activities accordingly.

Actions to be taken:

  • Maintain situational awareness and vigilance for personal safety.
  • Use caution when unexpectedly near large gatherings or protests.
  • Stay inconspicuous.

For the latest safety information, U.S. citizens traveling abroad should regularly visit the Department of State’s travel.state.gov website for country-specific information and travel advisories and warnings.

U.S. citizens are advised to carry valid travel documents and register with the State Department or the U.S. Embassy in Cairo through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, or STEP. By subscribing, we can keep you up to date on important safety announcements and also help your family and friends contact you in an emergency.
