Twitter suspended the account of Paul Graham, a VC who supports Musk, after he tweeted about a mastodon link

Paul Graham, a widely respected venture capitalist who has backed Elon Musk’s efforts on Twitter, had his Twitter account suspended on Sunday.

The suspension was followed by a tweet in which Graham wrote: “This is the last straw. I give up. You can find a link to my new Mastodon profile on my page.”

In this tweet he linked to a new Twitter policy which prohibits users from linking to competing social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Post and Nostr.

This policy also prohibits various ways to circumvent the rule, such as B. writing “instagram dot com/username” to avoid creating an actual link.

Apparently, Graham’s account was banned because he wrote, “You can find a link to my new Mastodon profile on my website.” This could be taken as an example of a workaround by Twitter.

wealth contacted Twitter but did not immediately receive a response; However, after we contacted the company, Graham’s account was unblocked.

Technology writer Gergely Orosz noted the suspension on his own Twitter account. Write, “Paul Graham — founder of Y Combinator and someone who has supported Elon Musk since the Twitter takeover — announced he’s taking a break from Twitter and suggested people could find his Mastodon account on his website . A few hours later it was blocked. I can not believe it…”

Howard Lerman, co-founder of several tech startups, was also surprised tweet: “Paul Graham (formerly @paulg) defines literally every attribute you could hope for in a social network: Deep, Polite, Thoughtful, Honest, Direct, Polite, Active, Responsive, Inclusive. I’m sure I missed a lot of things he is. And I’m really going to address him here.”

On Mastodon, which is widely seen as an alternative to Twitter for users tired of Musk’s chaos, Graham himself remained characteristically diplomatic, writing, “I haven’t ‘left’ Twitter. I just don’t want to keep using it while it bans links to other sites. Also, given the current development, it seemed like a good time to learn more about Mastodon.”

He added: “FWIW, I still hope Elon finds success with Twitter. Why wish someone to fail? But for me, not letting people post links to their other accounts was just too much.”

Others also commented on the suspension. Alexis Ohanian, founder and general partner of VC firm 776, noted Graham’s status as the “King” of Silicon Valley. He tweeted Sunday: “Wild. @PaulG got suspended (for sending people to his website to get a link to his mastadon). This is going to be really, really interesting. PG is SV royalty.”
