FCDO advises against all travel to Iran

Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel contrary to FCDO instructions. Consular support is also severely limited if the FCDO advises against travel.

If you are a British citizen and are already in Iran, either as a resident or as a visitor, think carefully about your presence there and the risks you are taking by staying there.

FCDO advises against all travel to Iran. British and British-Iranian dual nationals are at significant risk of arbitrary arrest, questioning or detention in Iran. Holding a British passport may be reason enough for the Iranian authorities to question you. If you are imprisoned in Iran, you could face months or years in prison.

Risks for British nationals in Iran

Consular assistance in Iran is extremely limited. If you require consular assistance, please contact the British Embassy in Tehran.

Dual nationals

The Iranian authorities do not recognize dual citizenship. If you have dual British-Iranian nationality and are detained in Iran, the authorities will not disclose this FCDOor grant FCDOAccess to see you. If you are detained, your case will be in the hands of the Iranian authorities, who have shown some hostility towards citizens of the United Kingdom and Great Britain.
