A 32-site campground on the northern edge of the lake was named David Ugle Campground, while the campground on the east side was renamed Mick Murray Campground in recognition of the former Collie MP’s contribution to the community.

These additions were officially opened by Environment Secretary Reece Whitby and Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns.

The former open-pit coal mine has been converted into a water-based recreation center for boating, swimming, water-skiing and camping called Kepwari, which means ‘play in the water’ in the local Wiilman language.

The new facilities bring the total number of campgrounds at Lake Kepwari to 53 and are part of the state government’s $24.5 million infrastructure investment program in parks and forests in the Collie region to enhance the city’s tourism credentials in the transition from coal to coal strengthen -powered industries.

Other tourism investments in the area include the giant mural at Wellington Dam, trails for mountain biking, hiking and driving, and a range of grants to support established and emerging companies in the industry.

Ms Hanns said she was proud to see the delivery of yet another voting commitment to the Collie community.

“I’m so proud of Lake Kepwari turning into a popular water-based recreation center,” she said.

“These new attractions will attract more visitors to the area and boost our local economy. What a great time exploring all the region has to offer.”
