TOUR DE COP 29: A Global Cycling Journey with Egyptian-German Roots, Promoting Sustainability

The TOUR DE COP returns this year with its third edition, continuing its mission to raise environmental awareness through cycling. This global initiative aims to inspire the next generation to take a more active role in promoting sustainability.

The Origin of TOUR DE COP

Launched in 2022 ahead of COP27, the first TOUR DE COP saw participants cycling 655 km from the German International University in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital to Sharm El Sheikh. This symbolic journey emphasized the importance of eco-friendly practices in the lead-up to the United Nations Climate Conference. Key participants included students, presidents from the DEO (German School in Cairo) and the GIU (German International University), and notable figures like former German Ambassador HE Frank Hartmann and retired Egyptian diplomat HE Mohamed Elewa.

TOUR DE COP 28: Expanding the Impact

In 2023, TOUR DE COP 28 expanded its reach with a 720 km cycling route starting from Muscat, passing through Al Ain and Abu Dhabi, and finishing in Dubai, the host city of COP28. Ambassadors, students, and global community leaders joined this journey, with the Ambassador’s Sustainability Awareness Ride being a highlight—13 ambassadors from various countries cycled together to raise awareness about sustainable living.

TOUR DE COP 29: A New Journey for a Greener Future

TOUR DE COP 29, supported by Pasha Holding from Azerbaijan and the Financial Center of Frankfurt, is set to commence on October 6th from the German International School in Tbilisi, Georgia. The team will cycle to Baku, Azerbaijan, with a scheduled arrival on October 12th. The 2024 edition’s theme, “MAKING PEACE WITH NATURE,” is inspired by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, emphasizing the need for urgent environmental action.

This year’s event continues to strengthen the connection between Egypt and Germany, with students and teachers from the DEO in Cairo and the Swiss International School in El Gouna participating. International involvement has also increased, with students from the German School in Abu Dhabi joining the initiative. There may still be a chance for last-minute participants to join this impactful ride.

Cultural Elements: Documentaries and Music

Each TOUR DE COP edition features a short documentary and an exclusive music track created specifically for that year. These creative elements highlight the cultural and emotional significance of the event, making it more than just a physical journey but a global movement toward sustainability.

Founded on Sustainability and Cooperation

TOUR DE COP was founded by Egyptian-German businessman Yusef Ahmed, a former board member of the AHK (Arab-German Chamber in Cairo). The initiative not only raises awareness about sustainability but also promotes international cooperation. It serves as a reminder that collective action can lead to a greener future, inspiring young people to take an active role in environmental efforts.

Looking Ahead: TOUR DE COP 30

Next year’s TOUR DE COP 30 promises to be even more ambitious, starting at the German School in Madrid and heading toward Lisbon before setting sail across the Atlantic Ocean. The journey will pass through the Canary Islands and Cape Verde, ultimately arriving in Belém, Brazil, the host city for COP30.

Join TOUR DE COP and be part of a global movement that promotes sustainability and environmental action, empowering the next generation of leaders to make a difference.
