The National Museum of American Diplomacy launches new, expanded website
On November 16, 2022, the National Museum of American Diplomacy launched a redesigned website with a number of new features. The new website will allow the museum to grow and meet the needs of our growing online visitors. It will provide a platform for future interactive content and hybrid programming as the museum prepares to open its physical doors to the public in the years to come.
The website features a new searchable collections database which currently contains a curated selection of over 200 objects. Other additions include a filterable resource database for teachers, a new introduction to diplomacy “Discover Diplomacy,” and a diplomatic encyclopedia.
Explore the database for searchable collections
Website visitors can now view over 200 objects in the museum’s collection – a small sampling of the over 10,000 objects held in our vault.
These new article pages allow users to enlarge images and discover the stories behind the articles. Through these items, the museum shares the work of diplomacy in a unique way. The museum will add more items from its collection to the website over time.
Discover eras and topics of diplomacy
Diplomacy is a huge subject. How to present the history, practice and challenges of diplomacy? In the site’s new Discover Diplomacy section, we delve into some periods and themes of diplomacy.
This ever-expanding section includes pages on three periods: “Revolutionary Diplomacy”, “Civil War and Reconstruction Era”, and “Cold War Diplomacy”. We also discuss four topics related to diplomacy: “Climate and Environment”, “Trade and Commerce”, “Human Rights and Democracy” and “Cultural, Educational and Sport Diplomacy”. The museum will continue to add periods and themes for users to explore in this section of the site.
Play with interactive components
Visitors will also notice the ability to interact with the site in new ways. Throughout the site, the museum will integrate quizzes and diplomatic scenarios. Through these interactive features, visitors can test their knowledge and play the role of a diplomat.
The website also offers exciting ways to interact with our collection. On the On the home page, users can toggle between items and click the “eyes” to discover images, videos, and stories behind the object. These features allow us to show users that there is more to diplomacy than meets the eye – there is a world of information to explore.
Search the Diplomatic Encyclopedia
What terms are used in the world of diplomacy? Our diplomatic encyclopedia allows people to delve into the concepts, people, places and practices of diplomacy.
Search the teacher resource database
We pride ourselves on our collection of educational resources including our popular diplomacy sims. The new site features a searchable, filterable database of resources for teachers to accommodate our growing collection.
By Spring 2023, the Museum will add a number of new instructional videos and classroom activities to this database. Stay tuned for updates as we develop these resources. In the meantime, browse our 13 Diplomacy simulations and watch our new video on object-based learning.
Interact with online exhibitions and diplomacy stories
The museum already has extensive online exhibits that help tell the story of diplomacy. With improved Search Engine Optimization (SEO), the website will attract more visitors to such exhibits.
The site also puts a new focus on the stories of diplomacy across the site. Our focus on storytelling reminds visitors that people are at the heart of diplomacy.
