The waterfalls of the Upper Lakes

Discover the beauty of Kozjak Lake

Kozjak is the largest (82 ha) and deepest (47 m) lake within the Plitvice Lakes. However, its uniqueness doesn’t just stop at these numbers. Kozjak is the only lake where visitors can enjoy a ride on an electric boat, and also the only lake with a rising island – better known as Štefanija Island. Kozjak forms the boundary between the Upper and Lower Lakes, as well as the boundary between Triassic dolomites and Cretaceous limestone. Until about 400 years ago, there were two lakes on the site of the single lake we see today. These lakes, like all others within the Plitvice Lakes, were separated by a tuff barrier. This barrier, about 400 meters wide and about 36 meters high, is located 6 meters below the water surface and reminds us of the history and story of this special natural phenomenon. On sunny days it can be seen from the electric boat as a white obstacle in the dark blue depths.
