The Beauty of Bonifacio – A Luxury Travel Blog

Diplomat.Today

We were looking forward to leaving from the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia for an extraordinary journey. Our journey would take us past the enchanting islands of the La Maddalena archipelago before finally docking in the rugged town of Bonifacio in Corsica.

Our adventure cruise started in Sardinia, known as the pearl of the Mediterranean. In Porto Rotondo we boarded our motor sailing yacht “Gulet”, a classic wooden boat from Turkey with a rich mahogany finish. After doing some last-minute shopping, we moved into one of the six spacious en-suite cabins and were given a detailed tour of the ship by the five-man crew before heading to Caprera, part of the La Maddalena archipelago. The captain quietly left the harbor as we said goodbye to the main island of Sardinia.

A beautiful bay to anchor

In the evening we anchored in Caprera, where we took a refreshing dip in the crystal clear water. The Italian private chef conjured up a 4-course menu of fresh pasta and seafood, accompanied by aperitifs and wine eagerly served by the hostess. We enjoyed the food and ended the day with a few drinks. When night fell, we retired to our huts, which were made for wonderful sleep, and woke leisurely in the morning to the beauty of the sea. Enjoying the 360 degree sea view during breakfast, the captain raised anchor and set sail for Bonifacio.

Bonifacio Village

As we approached the southernmost point of Corsica, the iconic port of Bonifacio came into view – a city that seemed to be carved directly into the jagged rocks at the entrance to the Mediterranean, as if chiseled from the cliffs. Perched on the high limestone cliffs, Bonifacio’s narrow streets wound between ancient buildings and offered fantastic views of the sea. From the bustling marina with its tall ships to the historic old town, every corner told stories of endurance and rich maritime history.

Local market

A journey through the village revealed the rich history of Bonifacio, where the medieval citadel and harbor reflect the city’s long-standing strategic importance to its defense. The Staircase of the King of Aragon offered a breathtaking panoramic view that enchanted visitors. Gourmets can expect a mix of French and Italian culinary traditions, with a variety of delicacies. Along the waterfront promenade, the restaurants formed an idyllic backdrop where you can enjoy fresh seafood, artisanal meats, homemade cheeses and excellent Corsican wines.

At the end of the day, the crew recommended finding a quiet spot on the cliffs to witness Bonifacio’s enchanting sunset. The golden rays of sunlight reflecting on the sea provided a romantic setting and an impressive spectacle. It was an unforgettable moment as the sun set, casting warm light over the calm water. This couldn’t be captured in a photo and was a must-see!

Explore the islands in the Mediterranean Sea

Our adventure trip from Sardinia to Bonifacio was truly magical. Each port of call – pristine beaches in Sardinia, historic charm in La Maddalena and captivating breathtaking beauty in Bonifacio – depicted the timelessness inherent in the sights of the Mediterranean. So, fellow travelers, let’s see the islands in the Mediterranean; to be fascinated by the sea as we explore these gems of the coastal islands!
