Year of the Bob
Could 2023 be the year that humble bob reigns supreme? Well, it seems so, as a number of pop culture IT girls have ditched long locks for the chic short hairstyle, including Wednesday star Jenna Ortega and Canadian actress Taylor Russell. Another contestant is reality star Hailey Bieber, and if her infamous “glazed nails” trend is anything, we’ll see millions of women shaving inches off before we know it.
The big reveal
The finishing touches are given to Lawson Flats – “a private members’ club for a new era” – where Fini Group has transformed a historic three-story art deco compound formerly occupied by women in Sherwood Court in the CBD. Karrakatta Club only. The new club will offer a coworking space, a bar and kitchen, a fitness and wellness area and a gallery. To celebrate the upcoming opening, the gallery will host a new exhibition, The Great Reveal, February 6-11, bringing together the work of more than 40 WA women and gender-biased artists. Participating artists were invited to exhibit a new work – including works in progress, propositional gestures or artistic failures.

It’s not for everyone, but there’s no doubt cold water therapy is having a moment — you can try it for yourself at the Peak Performance Institute in West Leederville. The practice of dipping in icy water is centuries old, but was popularized by extreme athlete Wim “The Iceman” Hof, elite athletes, and celebrities like Lady Gaga, who alternates icy and hot baths after a show. PPI also lets you switch between hot and cold by pairing its sauna with cold soaks, which are said to increase heart rate, release adrenaline, and create endorphins.
West Wind Discovery Center
The pioneering WA distiller has settled in Cowaramup with a brand new dual purpose home – a stylish distillery and tasting room, and a tavern with indoor and courtyard areas for eating, drinking and relaxing. Founder Paul White says his goal has always been to create a “spiritual home” in the region with a long history of distilling, and that Cow Town “cried out for something like a tavern”. Both venues have a “chic warehouse” vibe with a nautical theme, including murals and an old fishing boat for the kids to play on, and the tavern has a shared platter, entrees and charcuterie.
Cyrano
The charismatic Virginia Gay is behind this ‘cheerful, gender-biased retelling’ of Edmond Rostand’s classic play Cyrano de Bergerac, which runs from 17 February to 5 March as part of the Perth Festival. Presented by the Black Swan State Theater Company, it’s billed as “a wonderfully confident, knife-edge theatrical rom-com” and, among other things, a love letter to “the hot mess that is the human heart.” Tickets now on sale.
Valentine in the vines

Perth conquers Paris
Perth’s Troye Sivan served up some serious high fashion looks at Paris Fashion Week and we’re here for it. The pop star-turned-actor has attended several menswear shows including Loewe, Kenzo and Louis Vuitton and was spotted welcoming the return of preppy chic with a V-neck knit.
Madfish x Rimworld
Festival-goers toasting to Fringe World will be treated to a special edition Cuvée Blanc NV from WA winery MadFish designed for the festival. Featuring Pink Lady apple, Nashi pear and lemon zest flavors, the style will be available at Pleasure Garden and select retailers for the duration of Fringe.
