US Presidential Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry called a meeting with the UAE’s climate envoy and COP28 President-elect HE Sultan Al Jaber at the White House today to explore ways to increase climate ambition and accelerate climate action along the way to discuss at COP28 in Dubai in December year.
The meeting was attended by US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, Senior Advisor to President John Podesta, US Special Coordinator to the President for Global Infrastructure and Energy Security Amos Hochstein, National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi, Director of the Office of Scientific and and White House Technology Policy, Arabi Prabhakar, NSC Middle East and North Africa Coordinator, Brett McGurk, UAE Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba, and Director-General of COP28 Majid Al Suwaidi, as well as other senior UAE and US officials.
The discussion addressed the need to further develop the multilateral development banking system to help unlock additional climate finance, the role of the Inflation Reduction Law in accelerating investment and reducing costs in key clean technologies, and the need to invest in reliable global clean energy supply chains. Both sides recognized the role of the US-UAE Clean Energy Acceleration Partnership (PACE) as a promising platform to catalyze meaningful projects and investments in this regard.
Both sides agreed to engage in regular dialogue on these and related issues to contribute to a successful COP28 and a well-governed energy transition that offers energy security and affordability along with enhanced climate action.
