On March 27 and 28, the United States hosted the 6th U.S.-Republic of Korea (ROK) Working Group to Counter Cyber Threats from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). Led by Deputy Special Representative for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Lyn Debevoise, and Director General for North Korean Nuclear Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, Lee Jun-il, the meeting underscored the continued close cooperation between the governments of the United States and the Republic of Korea to disrupt the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s ability to generate illicit revenue through malicious cyber activities that it uses to fund its illicit weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs.
This meeting coincides with the Treasury Department’s designation of eight individuals and organizations, in coordination with the Republic of Korea, who were instrumental in transferring funds that strengthened Pyongyang’s ability to develop its weapons programs.
The United States and the Republic of Korea are pursuing a wide range of measures to prevent and disrupt cryptocurrency theft in the DPRK, combat cyber espionage against the defense sector, and dismantle IT staff infrastructure and networks in the DPRK. The working group meeting also focused on coordinated diplomatic outreach, information sharing and capacity building for countries facing the DPRK cyber threat.
