Security Alert: Violence in Chiapas
Case: The US Embassy in Mexico City has received reports of violence in San Cristobal, Chiapas, after a local businessman was killed. On the evening of April 17, media reported the presence of a large number of armed people in the Ojo de Agua neighborhood. There were also reports of gunfire in the Zona Norte and military convoys in the area. Today media reports that local shops and schools are closed. US citizens should exercise increased caution when traveling in or around San Cristobal. The US Embassy reminds US citizens that the State Department’s travel advisory for Chiapas is classified as Level 2: Increased Caution Due to Crime.
