Sixteen Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere stores float into the Viennese air. Towers on 30-foot poles are connected by futuristic glass-enclosed walkways. When the hotel opened in 2021, renowned architect Renzo Piano was awarded an award for the design of this luxury hotel with 303 rooms and 44 suites.

Interior art and design develop the legacy and Austrian adoration of Prince Eugene of Savoy. When his application to join the French army was rejected, Eugene, born in 1663, moved to Austria and became a national hero after his leadership helped save Vienna from the invading Ottoman army.

Inspired by Versailles, Prince Eugene built the Lower Belvedere Palace as his home and then the Upper Palace as his summer residence. Both are within walking distance of the Andaz.

Hyatt has rebooted Prince Eugene’s 2020s adoration at the Andaz Vienna. Imagine how a mythical young descendant of Prince Eugene, Eugen 21, would manage the hotel’s art collection.

The welcome

Arriving at the high reception, with its cool jazzy playlist, the formalities are quickly completed and the keys are handed out.

The room

High windows, as wide as the room, overlook Arsenalstrasse and the greenery of the Schweitzer Garten.

A light gray wallpaper runs above the wide double bed: a collage of reclining Adonis-like figures and chubby cheerful cherubs from classical mythology.

Because even the wide flat screen television is framed like a work of art, the room has a gallery feel with hanging artwork. The atmosphere is airy, light and spacious.

The bathroom

The inside of the toilet door is a mural to develop the Andaz’s artsy, out-of-the-box personality. A cartoon depicting Rome, Pisa, pizza, a Vespa and fashionable shoes takes guests on a tour of Italy. Oddly, the door slides over the toilet or bathroom.

The master bathroom has a large shower, rain shower or directional shower, and plenty of shelf space for toiletries.

The facilities

A drink at the rooftop bar, on the 16th floor, overlooking the Belvedere Palaces and over the center of Vienna, is an essential part of the Andaz experience.

The Eugen 21 restaurant, which is the descendant of the Eugene concept, is contemporary cool with its olive green sofas and dark wood tables. The wait staff in pinstripe vests and jeans straddles the line between formal and casual dining.

An amuse-bouche of a delicate cup of chilled cucumber-dill soup, with small scoops of warm crusty bread, heralds a serious, first-class dinner.

Being the capital of Austria, the star attraction is light slices of veal in the Vienna Schnitzel, served with a potato salad, blueberry sauce and lemon butter. Though there are many more options, including a vegetarian risotto, paprika chicken, roast boa pork, herb-crusted tenderloin, scallop linguini, and halibut.

The Fietser coffee shop is located next to Eugen 21. Bicycle saddles and handlebars mounted as deer heads and bar stools with pedals led to the award of a design prize. Obviously the menu is a Cyc List.

On the 4th floor, a 24-hour gym, again with large windows, provides great views for those on bikes and treadmills.

Belvedere, close to Vienna’s new main station, is an up-and-coming neighborhood. Andaz’s elevators show timetables of trains departing for Bratislava, Budapest, Munich, Prague and other major cities.

Belvedere 21, a contemporary art museum opposite the hotel, with a number of thought-provoking surrealist exhibits, gives free entry to Andaz guests who present their room keys.

Upper Belvedere Palace, a baroque creation, has Gustav Klimt’s sensual The Kiss in its permanent collection.

Other nice keys

Following Prince Eugene’s tradition of acquiring a large library, the lobby features a huge selection of glossy coffee table books on art, car design, fashion and travel.

During the day and evening, guests can help themselves with free coffee. tea and biscuits as they settle down to read a book or admire the artwork.

Costs

Double rooms, including breakfast, start from €229 per night.

The best bit

The abstract sculpture of Prince Eugene welcoming guests to the hotel sends a signal that art at the Andaz is a visual and intellectual feast.

Two Viennese galleries have assembled a large collection of art, a tribute to Prince Eugene’s role as a collector, which can be seen in both public spaces and guest rooms.

The final verdict

Andaz is derived from a Hindi word for personal style and the Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere delivers memorable eclectic style.

This luxury lifestyle hotel has both a view and a vision
