Qatar to Host United Nations General Assembly Presidents Meeting: Addressing Global Challenges and Fostering Cooperation

Qatar is gearing up to host a significant meeting of the United Nations General Assembly Presidents, scheduled to take place from May 2nd to May 3rd. This meeting coincides with the anticipated visit of the Group of Friends of the General Assembly to the country.

Her Excellency Sheikha Hanouf bint Abdulrahman Al Thani, Director of the International Organizations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted that the meeting sessions will delve into critical developments in the Middle East, with a particular focus on Gaza, as well as discussions on the situation in Ukraine. Additionally, the agenda includes topics such as the upcoming summit, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and the global digital agreement. The meeting is expected to culminate with the adoption of the Doha Declaration.

She emphasized that Qatar’s hosting of this meeting underscores its unwavering support for the United Nations’ endeavors and its dedication to multilateral international action in addressing regional and global challenges.

The Group of Friends of the President of the United Nations General Assembly, an initiative of the General Assembly Presidents Council comprising all former presidents, serves as a consultative forum and permanent diplomatic source. It aims to support the President of the United Nations General Assembly in any agreed-upon initiatives and endeavors to enhance the role of the General Assembly, particularly through its revitalization team.

Meanwhile, the Council of Presidents of the UN General Assembly, composed of former Presidents of the General Assembly, has expressed apprehension over the mounting threat of the United Nations’ marginalization. This council recently convened in New York to deliberate on pressing global issues. Emphasizing the imperative of safeguarding the relevance and efficacy of the UN, especially the General Assembly, amid escalating challenges, the council stressed the necessity of collective action and cooperation to effectively address global issues.
