In commemorating this year’s International Women’s Day and Egyptian Women’s Day for the fourth consecutive year, Leonora Rueda, the Mexican Ambassador to Cairo, emphasized the importance of solidarity among nations in the pursuit of gender equality.
“In diplomacy, the synergy between our voices is vital, especially among countries that have adopted a feminist foreign policy,” remarked the ambassador.
She elaborated that the embassy celebrates exceptional women in Egypt who pave the way for progress and change, ranging from development and entrepreneurship to ambitious students and policymakers, and beyond.
The theme of the celebration is “Inspiring Inclusion,” resonating deeply with the values cherished by both Mexico and Egypt. Inclusion goes beyond recognizing differences; it means embracing diversity, ensuring every voice is heard, appreciating every talent, and providing equal opportunities.
“While reflecting on the progress we’ve made and the challenges that persist, it is crucial to consider women’s representation in leadership positions. Only six countries worldwide have achieved the milestone of having 50% or more women in parliaments in one chamber or the lower house; Mexico and Sweden are among those countries,” she highlighted.
“This statistic serves as a reminder of the steps we’ve taken towards gender equality in political participation, while also shedding light on the ongoing need for concerted efforts to ensure women have a place in decision-making processes, not only in parliamentary representation but also in leadership roles in other fields such as corporate boards or academia,” she emphasized.
In conclusion, she remarked, “As we celebrate our achievements, we must also acknowledge the forthcoming challenges. With determination and perseverance, we must face these challenges head-on, knowing that the journey towards gender equality requires continuous effort and collective action.”
