Media release: Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield visits Ecuador,
Head of the US delegation to Costa Rica for the Second Summit for DemocracyIn Costa Rica at the Summit for Democracy, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will deliver a keynote speech on strengthening democracy around the world and increasing youth participation in the democratic process.
Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, US Representative to the United Nations, will travel to Ecuador and Costa Rica from March 29-31. During her trip she will speak about the importance of multilateralism in achieving regional peace and security goals. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will also advance the shared priorities of strengthening democratic institutions, increasing youth participation in democratic processes, and meeting the humanitarian and vulnerable needs of refugees and asylum-seekers.
On March 29, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will meet senior Ecuadorian government officials and participate in a public meeting with Secretary of State Juan Carlos Holguin on shared US-Ecuador multilateral priorities, including Ecuador’s 2023-2024 term as an elected member of the UN Security Council. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will also meet UN agencies and NGOs supporting refugee resettlement in Ecuador, which is home to more than half a million refugees and migrants. She will also engage with civil society, including Afro-Ecuadorian youth.
On March 30, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will lead the US delegation to Costa Rica for the 2023 Summit for Democracy, where she will participate in summit events hosted by Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves Robles. At the summit, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will deliver a livestreamed keynote speech on strengthening democracy around the world and increasing youth participation in the democratic process. She will also engage with youth activists and leaders focused on building a safer and fairer world based on democratic values.
During his visit to Costa Rica, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will meet with Costa Rican government officials, including President Chaves, members of civil society and Nicaraguans who have fled the repressive Ortega-Murillo regime. Costa Rica has been a welcoming host to large numbers of migrants and refugees from across the region.
