On April 4th, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, US Representative to the United Nations, hosted an Instagram Live with Chef José Andrés, Founder of the nutrition aid organization World Central Kitchen. That was the first in a series of Instagram Live Talks that Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield wants to have an organizer of gloBal challenges, including the climate crisis and food insecurity.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield and Chef Andres discussed efforts to respond to the global food insecurity crisis. The Ambassador said: “Ever since I arrived here in New York, my focus has been on food securityBBecause there is so much hunger in the world. And I recently went to Somalia, where they had just announced a famine, but people were still starving. And I announced that, with so much abundance in the world that we have to end famine.”
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield and chef Andrés spoke too around the importance of food diplomacy. “I’ve seen the power of a plate of food to bring people together – when you do it with joy, but also when you listen to each other,” said Chef Andres.
“That’s what gumbo diplomacy is. It’s food diplomacy… It’s about getting food straight to the people, so people know the world hasn’t forgotten them in times of need,” said Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield.
