A walk through the Lake District has been ranked as one of the best in the world. Ranked 15th, Catbells at Keswick was ahead of Italy’s stunning Path of the Gods on the Amalfi Coast, and even ahead of Peru’s iconic four-day Inca route or Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro. The Catbells round offers an unforgettable walking experience with breathtaking panoramic views over Derwentwater and the surrounding hills.
The analysis of the best hiking trails in the world was conducted by Explore Worldwide and rated them by distance, elevation, duration, weather and Instagrammability, assigning weighted points to each hike for each of these five categories. Argentina’s Perito Moreno Glacier Trail claimed first place in the global rankings for its awe-inspiring beauty. Coming in second is New Zealand’s Hooker Valley Track, known for its stunning vistas, while America’s Scenic Drive in Zion National Park, Utah rounds out the podium with its breathtaking views.

Standing at a modest elevation of 1,500 feet, Catbells offers an accessible climb even for less experienced hill walkers, making it popular with casual strollers and seasoned hikers alike. Starting at Hawes End, winding paths through lush foliage and delicate wildflowers lead adventurers to the base of Catbells. The ascent is accessible to most, with occasional steep sections requiring only moderate fitness. For those who keep, the rewards that await are worth it. From the top you can admire the sparkling waters of Derwentwater, the imposing silhouette of Skiddaw to the east and the silver ribbon of Borrowdale to the west.
Although modest in size, Catbells has an undeniable charm at any time of year and is an ideal starting point for anyone interested in exploring the surrounding hills such as Maiden Moor or Causey Pike.
