On May 6, Britain will crown a new monarch for the first time in 70 years. Royal watchmen around the world will tune in to watch King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla be formally invested with royal powers. The grand ceremony at Westminster Abbey is not open to the public, but London celebrates this momentous occasion in true royal style.

From waving to the King and Queen on their way to the coronation to dancing all night in celebration, here are the best ways to celebrate this unique event.

The Procession of the King

The coronation begins with a royal procession from the king. King Charles and Queen Camilla will make their way from their home in Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in grand style. Watch the procession and wish the new monarchs well as the procession meanders through the streets of London. Then find a big screen at one of the many pop-up displays in central London to watch the historic ceremony.

The coronation ball

After the coronation, The Ritz London organizes a lavish coronation ball. Guests will enjoy a champagne and sofa reception, a five-course Michelin-starred dinner and a performance by the BBC Big Band. The King and Queen probably won’t be in attendance, but it’s a great way to celebrate the new monarchs and the start of a new era for Britain.

coronation garden party

Head to Grosvenor Square in Mayfair on May 6 and 7 for a Royal Coronation Garden Party. It’s a great place to see screenings of coronation events on cinema-sized screens. There will be a wide variety of Royal-inspired foods and drinks to get the party started. It wouldn’t be a garden party without captivating floral installations and beautiful tablescapes and this party is going to go wild.

Coronation bus tour

Hop on a decked-out classic double-decker bus for Brigit’s Bakery Coronation Bus Tour. Grant Harrold, The Royal Butler, has put together a quintessentially English tea experience fit for a king for this special event. The bus will be decorated with spectacular crowns, flags and other coronation decorations. The luxury coach passes some of London’s main attractions while guests feast. During the tea and tour, guests will learn fascinating facts about King Charles, Queen Camilla and the coronation. Tours run until the end of May.

The coronation ball

On the evening of May 6, head to the Royal Albert Hall for a coronation ball. Performances will focus on the rich historical tradition of coronation music, including royal hymns and overtures by Elgar, Holst, Handel and John Williams. The Coronation Prom Massed Choir and All Souls Orchestra, who have enjoyed a long residency at the Hall, will perform. The Kingdom Choir, who sang at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding, will also perform alongside other renowned guest artists.

Coronation Afternoon Tea

The iconic Theater Royal Dury Lane is hosting a special Coronation Afternoon Tea in honor of the new King and Queen. The tea, which runs through May 10, is served on bespoke porcelain depicting mythical British characters. Afternoon tea features all the sweet and savory items typical of the theatre’s tea service, including a variety of savory snacks, warm scones and homemade jams. However, the coronation tea marks this momentous occasion by including lavish cakes adorned with royal symbols and topped with golden crowns.

Party all year round

Can’t come to London for the coronation? No problem. There are plenty of ways to celebrate in royal style all year round. On June 17, King Charles celebrates his first Trooping of the Color, an annual celebration of the Monarch’s birthday. Shortly after the coronation, the Tower of London will transform its world-famous Jewel House with even more stories about the history and significance of the Crown Jewels. The Tower of London will also unveil the new Coronation Bench Trail. Royal fashion aficionados can head to Kensington Palace to see the most ambitious exhibition the Palace has hosted to date, the Crown to Couture Exhibition. The Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace features Style & Society: Dressing The Georgians, an exhibition of dresses worn at court in the Georgian era. Both exhibitions are on view through October 2023. Those wanting to catch a glimpse of the royal family from the past can attend a performance of SIX The Musical in London’s famous West End theater district.
