Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Egypt, H.E. Hong Jin-wook, hopes to expand the academic exchanges between Korea and Egypt.
The delegation of the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP), one of the leading research centers in South Korea, held a joint seminar with the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategy Studies (ACPSS) on the theme of “Changes in International Relations in the MENA Region and Trilateral Economic Cooperation between Korea and North Africa” on Monday 19 September during their visit to Egypt from 17 to 20 September.
During this seminar, Korean and Egyptian scholars discussed the impact and implications of the Russian-Ukraine war on the MENA regional relations, global energy markets, and economic cooperation between Korea and North Africa. In addition, they exchanged opinions on the political and economic situation in the Middle East and Northeast Asia, and discussed ways to strengthen future economic cooperation between Korea and Egypt.
Dr. Kim Heungchong, President of KIEP, pointed out that the prolongation in the Russian-Ukraine war and global supply chain disruption caused energy and food price to skyrocket. He stressed Korea and Egypt should expand their bilateral cooperation to various fields to overcome such difficulty, and fields that the Egyptian government considers priorities, such as digital transformation, green energy, and nuclear power plant, are possible areas for cooperation.
Ambassador Hong Jin-wook attended the seminar and delivered congratulatory remarks in which he highlighted that the event provides a meaningful opportunity to both sides through sharing views on the situation in the MENA region and deepening mutual understanding. He expressed his gratitude in having experts from top Korean and Egyptian strategic think tanks together to discuss the recent global situation such as the Russian-Ukraine war. Ambassador Hong believes the network formed by the KIEP-ACPSS joint seminar will pave the way for future academic cooperation between the two countries, which then would serve as a solid foundation for sustainable bilateral relations.
The Korean Embassy in Egypt has been exploring various ways to cooperate with major Egyptian universities and research institutes, including the support for today’s seminar, and will continue to endeavor for vigorous academic exchanges between Korea and Egypt.
