Kerrs Chelsea meets Carpenters Lyon in Champions League

Chelsea’s Sam Kerr and Lyon’s Ellie Carpenter are set to face off in the women’s Champions League after their powerful clubs were drawn against each other in the quarter-finals.

Champions Lyon, who Carpenter returned to their side last weekend after an eight-month absence following a serious knee injury in last season’s final, presents a major hurdle for their Australia international Kerr, who is aiming for the one big trophy, that of her shining Chelsea missing CV

Matildas’ colleagues Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley will also be in the last eight for Arsenal, who took on German giants Bayern Munich in Friday’s draw in Nyon, Switzerland.

Both English clubs Chelsea and Arsenal have the advantage of playing the second legs of their clashes at home after winning their groups.

With the semi-final draw also taking place on Friday, both Chelsea and Lyon have been plunged into the most difficult section of the draw, with winners likely to meet 2021 champions Barcelona, who have beaten Roma in the last eight will compete.

So if Kerr and her dominant Chelsea side prevail in top form, they could be in for a repeat of the 2021 final when they were defeated 4-0 by the Spanish champions in Gothenburg.

Barcelona lost last season’s final 3-1 to Lyon, who clinched a record eighth Champions League, although it was a bittersweet night for full-back Carpenter, who escaped with her cruciate ligament rupture in the first quarter of an hour.

Should Arsenal win their quarter-finals, they will face either French club PSG or Germany’s Wolfsburg to secure a place in the final on June 3 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
