On behalf of the United States of America, I congratulate the Italian people as they celebrate the 78th anniversary of the founding of the Italian Republic on June 2, 1946.

The United States and Italy are steadfast allies, strategic partners and close friends. Our long-standing relationship is based on shared transatlantic values ​​and our goals of a peaceful, prosperous and democratic world. We are grateful for Italy’s leadership during this year’s G7 presidency, as well as for its partnership in addressing key global challenges, including its support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing brutal and unjustified aggression. As a NATO ally, Italy continues to play an important role in promoting security and stability in the Mediterranean and beyond.

Millions of Americans claim their Italian heritage, a bond that binds our nations even closer together. Today, as we celebrate Italy’s Republic Day, our nations are closer than ever before and we reaffirm our commitment to our shared values ​​and our common future.
