Free at-home COVID testing is making a comeback as the federal government prepares for a surge in infections in the winter
The White House will reopen a program that will allow people in the US to order batches of home coronavirus tests free of charge as officials prepare for a spike in cases over the winter, people familiar with the matter said.
The measure will be officially announced on Thursday, the people said, speaking on condition of anonymity before the announcement. The move is the fourth round of testing that US households can order.
The move was previously reported by Politico.
Officials expect Covid-19 cases to continue to rise this winter and have urged Americans to get a booster shot, particularly those aged 65 and older or who have health conditions.
The administration has asked Congress for more funding for its Covid response, but so far that request has not been granted.
