EU-US Joint Naval Exercise – US Embassy and Consulates in Italy

On March 23-24, 2023, the European Union and the United States of America conducted a joint naval exercise as agreed in the latest round of EU-US high-level consultations on the Indo-Pacific on December 2, 2022.

The joint naval exercise took place as part of the EU and US patrols and exercise of the freedom of navigation on the high seas. The exercise involved the USS PAUL HAMILTON as well as the Spanish ship REINA SOFIA and the Italian ship CARLO BERGAMINI from the EU naval operation Atalanta. It included a technical exchange on embarkation procedures, ship navigation and training to improve interoperability and integration.

The exercise is part of the joint EU-US commitment to work towards practical maritime cooperation and to support a free and open Indo-Pacific, in line with documents such as the EU Strategic Compass, the EU Strategy for Cooperation in the Indo- Pacific and the US Indo-Pacific Strategy.

The EU and the US reaffirm their commitment to continue regional maritime security coordination and complementary work to support freedom of navigation and other internationally legitimate uses of the sea in the Indo-Pacific.
