Eighty Years of Contribution.. Launch of a Conference to Review the Journey of Close Cooperation between Egypt and the United Nations

As part of the efforts to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations, the activities of the conference “Egypt and the United Nations: Eighty Years of Contribution” were launched today, which is held in cooperation between the Multilateral Affairs and International Security Sector of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the United Nations in Egypt, and the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University.
According to a statement issued by the United Nations Information Center in Egypt, the conference aims to review the journey of close cooperation between Egypt and the United Nations over the past decades, and to highlight Egypt’s active role in the fields of peace, security and international development.
The opening session was attended by Ambassador Amr Al-Jowaili, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral Affairs and International Security, Elena Panova, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Egypt, Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdel Sadek, President of Cairo University, Dr. Hanan Ali, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, President of the Conference, in addition to a group of officials, experts, academics and representatives of the United Nations in Egypt.
The conference includes a series of discussion sessions that highlight Egypt’s diverse contributions to the United Nations system.
The first session addressed Egypt’s role in maintaining international peace and security, including its efforts in disarmament and peacekeeping operations. It was chaired by Dr. Mohamed Salman Taie, Professor of Political Science at Cairo University, with the participation of Ambassador Seif Allah Qandil, Director of the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding, and a number of senior officials.
The second session discussed Egypt’s contribution to international development, by reviewing global economic relations, environmental issues, climate change, and urban development. It was attended by Ambassador Wael Aboul Magd, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Climate, Environment and Sustainable Development Affairs, Alessandro Fracassetti, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program in Egypt, and Ahmed Rizk, Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Program Office in Egypt, in addition to a number of officials and experts.
The third session focused on Egypt’s contributions to specialized international agencies and regional economic blocs, while the fourth session reviewed Egypt’s role in the fields of women’s empowerment, health, population, and food security, with the participation of representatives of relevant United Nations organizations, including Jean-Pierre Demarjorie, Director of the World Food Program Office in Egypt, Dr. Nema Abed, Representative of the World Health Organization in Egypt, Marwa Alam El-Din, Acting Representative of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women in Egypt, Yves Sassenrath, Representative of the United Nations Population Fund in Egypt, and Dr. Ahmed Mokhtar, Director of Technical and Economic Programs, Regional Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for the Near East and North Africa.
This conference reflects the commitment of Egypt and the United Nations to strengthening their partnership to achieve common goals in sustainable development and international peace and security, and represents a platform for constructive dialogue between experts and decision-makers to shape the future and support Egypt’s role in the United Nations system.
The conference is scheduled to conclude tomorrow, with recommendations aimed at enhancing prospects for cooperation between Egypt and the United Nations, which contributes to achieving sustainable development and consolidating stability and prosperity.
