Egypt and South Korea Explore Enhanced Cooperation in Electricity and Renewable Energy

South Korea’s ambassador to Egypt, Kim Yonghyon, met with Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud El-Masry, to discuss opportunities for expanding bilateral cooperation in the fields of electricity and renewable energy.

During the meeting, Ambassador Kim underscored the critical role Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity plays in the nation’s economic development and overall welfare through its energy policies and power supply initiatives. He acknowledged the ongoing successful cooperation between South Korea and Egypt in nuclear and renewable energy projects and expressed interest in broadening this collaboration to other areas, including energy storage systems, smart grids, and energy efficiency initiatives.

Nuclear Energy and Climate Action

Ambassador Kim highlighted the significance of Egypt’s Dabaa nuclear power plant project, noting its importance in Egypt’s strategy for energy diversification and combating climate change. He praised the close partnership between the involved Korean company and Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity, emphasizing the role of nuclear energy in supporting Egypt’s long-term energy security and sustainability goals.

Green Energy Leadership

Ambassador Kim also commended Egypt’s efforts to become a global leader in renewable energy and green hydrogen. He spotlighted the advanced technology and expertise that Korean companies bring to these fields and mentioned several key projects being developed by Korean firms in Egypt’s Ain Sokhna region, including renewable energy, green hydrogen, and green ammonia initiatives. Kim expressed optimism about the ongoing progress and the potential for further expansion in green energy cooperation between the two nations.

Future Prospects

Minister El-Masry acknowledged South Korea as a vital partner in Egypt’s energy sector, particularly in electricity and renewables. He praised South Korea’s technological advancements and expertise and expressed enthusiasm for future collaboration, especially in the fields of renewable energy and green hydrogen. The minister emphasized the importance of successfully implementing ongoing projects and strengthening the energy partnership between the two countries.

Both officials concluded the meeting with a shared vision of deepening cooperation across the energy spectrum, positioning Egypt and South Korea as key partners in the global transition toward cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions.
