Christmas gift guide 2022: Sustainable workwear brands to shop this winter
Whether you’re back in the office — or just tired of wearing the same old tracksuits at home — your workwear collection could probably use a refresh.
With fast fashion in mind, here are some sustainable apparel and accessory brands with quality products and quality production methods to consider for investment pieces that will last more than a few seasons.
Another morning
Made in Italy, Another Tomorrow bills itself as a farm-to-fabric atelier with ultra-fine, ethically-sourced, farm-sourced Merino wool suiting pieces, including the double-breasted jacket and wide-leg suit pants, now featured in the Prince of Wales” plaid palette. Other options that span the seasons include the long-sleeved, crew-neck t-shirt dress, made from a tailored organic cotton-Tencel blend with a touch of stretch (and suitable for both casual and formal events), and the extremely elegant, tailored coat made from recycled wool.
Silver
The pink pant suit is ubiquitous these days, and among the most attainable options at an affordable but well-crafted price tag is Argent, a women’s workwear brand that defines itself as a brand that promotes gender equality, which last through an activation linked to National Voter Registration Day in September. The Seasonless Wool blazer and matching trousers are made from a lightweight fabric that regulates temperature, resists odor and creases, allowing it to be worn alone all year round or with a coat in colder temperatures.
AYR
AYR is short for All Year Round and makes quality basics that you can really wear all year round, either alone or layered in cooler temperatures. For fall and winter, the brand offers a range of workwear-ready options in pima and merino, including the men’s ‘Big Win’ coat, the women’s ‘Espionage’ trench coat and the aptly named, stretchy ‘Crowd Pleaser’. ” A dress.

British label Ben Sherman recently launched a new line perfect for work from the office, from home and everywhere in between. Eileen Fischer
Eileen Fisher has long been a brand of comfortable, understated designs that are still elegant, sophisticated and contemporary. And the company is pioneering circular fashion as the nonprofit Eileen Fisher Foundation seeks to promote sustainable design and recycled fabrics. The brand uses sustainable jersey – which is super soft, stretchy and breathable – made from Tencel Lyocell fiber, sourced from responsibly harvested trees. And its cashmere sweaters are made from yarn spun from recycled cashmere, part of the brand’s commitment to changing the way clothes are made.
For days
One way some apparel retailers maintain sustainable practices is through a “closed loop system,” where companies take back worn products to later recycle the fabric into new goods. For Days – which specializes in classic, minimalist aesthetics for both men and women – rewards shoppers with credits for returning items when they’re done using them, so they can be recycled responsibly. The brand recently launched a new linen collection that specifically embraces the Scandinavian style (“Scandi style”), bringing more hygge and comfort to your daily life, from staples like the breezy Linen button-down shirt and Linen jogging pants.
Frank & Eileen
B-Corp certified Frank & Eileen ranks behind outdoor apparel giant Patagonia among globally recognized US apparel companies. The company is also wholly female-owned and managed (with no outside venture capital investment), with a commitment to supporting working mothers in the workplace. At the brand’s California headquarters, there is a fully equipped facility built specifically for new mothers to breastfeed, pump or just spend time with their babies. And the company has pledged $10 million over the next 10 years to empower women leaders in small businesses. As for the clothing itself, the brand says it only works with sustainable manufacturers to create pieces using raw materials found in nature to create simple yet timeless and quality basics, like the triple fleece capelet top and the organic voile button-down shirt-through dress.
Grayson
Grayson touts it has “revisited the perfect button-up shirt for today’s woman,” addressing a problem in womenswear that has existed for decades and has really only been addressed publicly—that so much womenswear has been designed without consideration on different body types. Founder Audrey McLoghin brought 30 women together to create perfectly fitting button-ups that really fit and eliminate “that dreaded gap between the breasts”. The brand’s best sellers include the ‘Changemaker’ dress in tissue cotton and the ‘Hero’ shirt in washed cotton with buttons.
Luxmii
Luxmii creates sustainable luxury women’s fashion made from pure linen. Each piece is designed with a ‘less is better’ philosophy, with an emphasis on creating timeless garments that can be mixed and matched with anything the customer already owns. In particular, Luxmii’s linen two-piece sets are functional, breathable and durable, exuding a minimalist style that is calm but collected.
Modern citizen
Modern Citizen describes their brand as “considered fashion with a luxurious sensibility – made accessible, eclectic and modern”. Although the designs and fabric cuts are meant to be modern and quirky – like the Yimei Side Slit Midi Dress and Tove T-Shirt Wrap Maxi Dress – each piece is made with the intention of being worn season after season. Based on stretchy but comfortable fabrics like rayon and spandex, the brand’s clothing is machine washable, making it easier to wear again and reducing long-term care costs for the customer.
perennial
Sarah Staudinger and George Augusto founded Staud in 2015 with the idea that high fashion should not only empower women, but also be accessible. The Los Angeles-based label takes a slightly avant-garde approach to basic designs with added lines, cuts and shapes here and there, while also reinterpreting traditional fabrics with twists. Focusing on the return to the office, Staud’s full fall collection is showcased through a vegan leather line of tops, pants and blazers.
