I love IJ Hallen. As a resident of Amsterdam, I have personally experienced the excitement and bustle of the IJ-Hallen.

Nestled in the heart of one of the most densely populated areas of the Netherlands, the IJ-Hallen is truly a unique gem. Considered the largest in Europe, this huge flea market perfectly balances supply and demand, giving visitors the best chances of finding exactly what they want.

The way to the IJ-Hallen is easy: take the free ferry service 906 from behind Amsterdam Central Station to the NDSM site and you will arrive at the bustling market within a five-minute walk from the ferry stop. Each month, the IJ-Hall receives thousands of visitors and vendors, making it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in an unforgettable shopping experience.

As you stroll through the countless stalls, you will discover many stalls selling an incredible variety of items from vintage clothing and antiques to unique trinkets and unexpected treasures! It’s no wonder this fantastic flea market has become a much-loved part of Amsterdam’s cultural fabric, offering locals and tourists alike a truly unforgettable shopping experience.

Location and accessibility

IJ-Hallen is located on the NDSM wharf in Amsterdam North, a creative and artsy area that has become a hub for artists and entrepreneurs. The flea market is open monthly on weekends from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM

It is easily accessible from different parts of Amsterdam and is a short distance from Central Station. The ferry is free and fast, which I find very convenient. Once in the garden, it’s hard to miss the creative atmosphere of the various art projects, studios and exhibitions in the area.

How do I reach IJ-Hallen from Central Station by ferry?

I frequent the IJ-Hallen regularly and the easiest way to get there from Amsterdam Central Station is with the free ferry service. To do this, go to the back of the train at Amsterdam Central Station and find the ferry stop. Here you will find ferry service 906 towards NDSM-Werf.

The ferry only takes about 15 minutes and lets you enjoy the Amsterdam skyline as you cross the IJ. Ferries run every half hour, so you don’t have to worry about waiting too long.

Once you have arrived at the NDSM wharf, it is only a five-minute walk to the IJ-Hallen. The area is well marked and you can easily follow the signs or ask the locals for directions. The NDSM wharf is an interesting place to explore, with its creative spaces, street art and unique architecture. It pays to walk around before or after your visit to the market.

In the IJ-Hallen you will experience the largest flea market in Amsterdam. The vast selection of items ranging from vintage clothing to antiques, handmade items and irresistible street food makes it easy for anyone to search for a souvenir they will love. The atmosphere is lively and a great way to spend a day in the city.

The real market experience

As a new resident of Amsterdam, I have had the pleasure of visiting the IJ-Hallen many times, with visits having become part of the family routine. The market is by far one of the best flea markets in Europe.

There are dozens of sellers both inside and outside the NDSM. It’s a joyful experience with vendors playing music, sparking conversation, and immersing you in locals and tourists around the world.

When planning your trip to the IJ-Hallen, keep in mind that the market is held about once a month. Check their official website each month for specific dates and times.

Once you arrive, be prepared to spend a few hours browsing through a wide variety of vintage and second-hand items. A comfortable pair of shoes is essential as you will be walking and standing for an extended period of time. It’s a good idea to dress in layers, as the weather in Amsterdam can be unpredictable at times.

Don’t be afraid to haggle! Normally this is one of those tired, stereotypical, hardcore traveler tips that I think is rubbish (pay people, for God’s sake!). Still, sellers in the IJ-Hallen are quite open to price negotiations, so don’t hesitate to make a fair offer on that one-of-a-kind treasure you’ve discovered. As a local I can confirm that bargaining is part of the fun and can make your visit to this iconic Amsterdam flea market more memorable.

The IJ-Hallen market offers a fantastic shopping experience. With easy access to Amsterdam North, it is a must-visit destination for anyone living or visiting Amsterdam. Since you’re making the journey, it’s another great excuse to check out the array of things to do in Amsterdam North, such as the STRAAT Museum, A’DAM Toren, and Amsterdam’s excellent craft breweries. We love Oedipus Brewing – we still have questions about the name, but the beer is excellent.

Do I need cash in the IJ hall?

In my experience it is a good idea to bring cash with you when you visit the IJ-Hallen. While some merchants accept cards or mobile payments, most transactions are still cash.

ATMs are usually available on site, but I recommend coming with enough Euros to avoid waiting in line or running out of cash. It is also worth noting that the entrance fee for a standard adult visitor is 6 euros, with early access 10 euros. You can buy tickets at the entrance.

Can I become a seller at IJ-Hallen?

IJ-Hallen is an incredible place for buyers and sellers. With more than 750 stalls in two warehouses, IJ-Hallen offers a diverse range of second-hand items, including vintage clothing, antiques, records, furniture and much more. A friend of mine found it quite easy to become a seller in this eclectic market by registering online and paying a small fee for the space.

Is there something to eat or drink in the IJ-hal?

Yes, and as someone who spends hours wandering here, I appreciate the availability of food and drink. As you wander around looking for your perfect bargain, you’ll find a variety of food stalls offering diverse culinary delights. In my experience, the many food stalls and drinking establishments in the IJ-Hallen fit perfectly with the great atmosphere of this unique flea market.

The NDSM wharf

Because I live so close by, I often visit the NDSM wharf on TT Neveritaweg in Amsterdam North. The area is not only an industrial port, but also a vibrant cultural hotspot that I enjoy exploring.

In addition to the flea market, the NDSM wharf hosts numerous art events and festivals throughout the year, such as concerts, fashion shows, and food truck gatherings. One of my favorite museums in Amsterdam is the STRAAT Museum (or Street Museum), with eclectic hanging banners of street art in a warehouse setting.

These events, along with the street art and graffiti, make the NDSM wharf an inspiring place – a true reflection of Amsterdam’s cultural diversity and creativity.

Entrance and tickets for the IJ-hal

I usually start by buying tickets online when I plan a visit to the IJ-Hallen flea market. They offer tickets for specific dates; you can check their calendar for available dates. The market is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Remember that cancellation is impossible once you have purchased an e-ticket. You can, however, resell the IJ-Hallen tickets via TicketSwap if you change your plan.

Based on my visits to the IJ-Hallen market, the entrance fee is affordable and worth it. Admission tickets, or entry tickets, give access to a frenzied market atmosphere where you can explore countless stalls and find unique items and second-hand clothes.

On the day of the market I always make sure that I have my e-ticket ready for scanning at the entrance. Upon entering, you can explore different stands with different items for sale. If you need to leave the market temporarily and plan to return later, ask for a stamp at the exit. It’s a convenient way to re-enter without the hassle.
