The African Development Bank and several partners are holding a forum in Kigali, Rwanda on December 14, 2022 to unveil the newly launched African Pharmaceutical Technology Foundation (APTF). The forum will take place during the 2n/a International Conference on Public Health in Africa running December 12-15.

In June this year, the Bank’s Board of Directors approved the creation of the APTF to boost the continent’s access to technology for the production of drugs, vaccines and other pharmaceuticals.

The forum, titled TTechnology Access for Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: The African Pharmaceutical Technology Foundation,” will include a discussion of existing barriers to technology access in the African pharmaceutical sector. It will focus on innovative approaches involving partnerships, intellectual property and domestic capacity building that promotes sustainable pharmaceutical production in Africa.

The Foundation is an important step towards improving the health prospects of a continent plagued by disease but with minimal capacity to produce its own medicines and vaccines. According to Bank data, Africa imports more than 70% of the medicines it needs, at a cost of up to $14 billion a year.

A delegation of senior African Development Bank officials will attend the breakfast forum, including Solomon Quaynor, vice president for the private sector, infrastructure and industrialization; Lecturer. Padmashree Gehl Sampath, Special Advisor to Dr. Adesina for pharmaceuticals and health; Nnenna Nwabufo, Director General for East Africa; and Aissa Toure Sarr, the Country Manager for Rwanda.

A panel discussion will also take place on the forum Improving access to technology and technology transfer for domestic production in Africa. Panelists are experts from the World Health Organization, Rwandan ministries and other stakeholders.
