From the sun-kissed beaches of popular resorts to the rugged islands dotting the turquoise sea, Greece constantly draws visitors for its stunning natural beauty and sees them return year after year to bask in its warm welcome and rich history. The kaleidoscope of experiences is perfect for exploring on a luxury charter yacht, with a personalized itinerary designed to suit every taste.

Opinions differ on the exact number of islands in the vast Greek archipelago, but as the American novelist Henry Miller once wrote: “It takes a lifetime to discover Greece, but it takes but an instant to fall in love with her.”

Before embarking on a cruise through the Aegean and Ionian Seas, we invite you to take a look at our guide to yacht charter in and around this breathtaking and unique country.

Given the miles of coastline it is no surprise that there is an endless choice of yachts of all shapes and sizes available for charter in Greece. But it’s important to do your research or find a reputable charter broker as the enticing photos and top prices can be misleading. When determining your budget, keep in mind that you will need to pay an APA (Advanced Provisioning Allowance) of 20-30% plus a discretionary tip of up to 20%. There are plenty of motor and sailing yachts with different accommodation configurations for families or groups of friends, so a broker can help you make the best choice for you and your companions.

There are four main groups of islands to choose from in Greece: the Ionian Islands, the Aegean and Sporades, the Cyclades and the Dodecanese. Itineraries may include one or more of these island groups, depending on the length of your charter.

Ionian Islands

Scattered along the west coast of central Greece and south of the Peloponnese, the Ionian Islands were a mix of major tourist attractions such as Corfu and the smaller, quieter Paxi. According to legend, Paxi would form the southernmost tip of Corfu if Poseidon had not broken it off with his trident.

Corfu may be known for its popular beach resorts, but the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Renaissance, Baroque and Classical influences. There are also breathtaking natural landscapes, good weather all year round and much more to entice visitors to one of the most cosmopolitan Mediterranean destinations.

A true gem in the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia became popular after the publication of the 1994 book and subsequent movie Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, set on the island during World War II. Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts will be delighted to set their sights on exploring the crystal-clear waters in hopes of spotting the rare Caretta-caretta sea turtle or Mediterranean monk seals.

Why not drop anchor at Zakynthos (aka Zante) and enjoy the 7,000 species of flowers naturally found on this verdant island. Or take in the sights of the capital, including Solomos Square, where traditional architecture displays a rich history, but is also home to some of the island’s sensational restaurants. Reserve a table at ‘Prosilo’ to enjoy the open kitchen and creative Greek and international dishes.

Catamarans make ideal charter yachts and can be more affordable while still providing five-star service. They also feature wide beams and shallow drafts, providing plenty of outdoor space and allowing you to dive into any small cove or secluded beach. A good captain knows the best places to anchor, and the crew can set up the water toys and maybe a beach picnic.

Aegean & Sporades

The Aegean Islands are less visited than some other regions, making them the perfect place for a less crowded yacht charter holiday, especially if you are interested in art, culture and history. Some of the larger islands include Samos, Lesbos and Samothraki, while there are several small islands such as Agios Efstratios. Traveling by yacht, you can visit this less accessible island and see the old town on the hill or dine at one of the great value restaurants in town that specialize in local lobster.

Some people may recognize the Sporades as the island of Skopelos was used as a location in the movie Mamma Mia. Besides the carpet of pine forests, the island is also known for the ‘Skopelos cheese pie’ or Strifti. For a more cosmopolitan vibe, Skiathos has a vibrant nightlife with bars and clubs on the old harbor and an area known for its ‘super clubs’ on the way to the airport.

The Cyclades

Perhaps the most famous of the island groups are the Cyclades, which are easy to navigate and popular for island hopping, making them perfect for charter holidays. There’s also something for everyone in this collection of diverse islands, ideal for groups just getting started with chartering, as well as those looking to drop anchor regularly.

Perhaps the most cosmopolitan and internationally renowned of the Cyclades is Mykanos, home to top hotels, resorts, designer boutiques and some of the most famous restaurants and bars in Greece. However, Mykanos still delivers the charm with picturesque villages with cobbled alleyways, whitewashed houses and bright blue shutters and roofs.

Paros, like its neighbor Naxos, is popular with Athenians hoping to escape the heat of summer in the capital. With so many local visitors you can be sure to find some fantastic authentic restaurants and a truly Greek atmosphere. Home to many sculptors, painters and poets of ancient Greece, this lovely island is also steeped in history.

Santorini is perhaps best known for its rich black sand, created by volcanic eruptions that have occurred approximately every 20,000 years! The volcano’s crater is known locally as the ‘caldera’ and you can take a seat in one of the nearby cafes to witness the spectacle of one of Europe’s only active volcanoes.

Syros combines culture and entertainment during the festival season, with celebrations of classical music, animation and culture. Pay a visit to Avant Garden, one of the most stylish restaurants on the island where you dine in style in a classic Cycladic garden in the heart of the capital Ermoupolis.

Dodecanese

The Dodecanese consists of 12 large islands and numerous smaller ones, which lie in a crescent shape off the Turkish coast and where the Ottoman influence can still be seen. The largest and perhaps most popular island is Rhodes, which is considered one of the sunniest places in Greece and has a long maritime history. Its 220 km of coastline make it a fantastic place for cruising aboard a motor or sailing charter yacht.

Most yachts are crewed by local residents who are happy to share their local knowledge, as well as plan activities, games and themed evenings to entertain their guests. There is no doubt that a good crew is the heart and soul of a charter experience!

In stark contrast to busy Rhodes is Symi, a quiet and very traditional island where you feel as if you have stepped back in time. With fewer commercial travelers able to reach Symi, a charter yacht gives you a rare chance to see the colorful hillside architecture. Enjoy a leisurely meal in the port area (Gialos) or climb the 500 stone steps to the village (Choria) to enjoy the spectacular view. Watch out for your yacht and crew as they wait to welcome you back on board with a cool drink and a warm welcome.
