World Press Freedom Day – US Embassy & Consulates in Mexico
Antony J. Blinken, Secretary of State
on the 30thth On the annual World Press Freedom Day, the United States extends its deepest gratitude to the distinguished journalists and media professionals around the world whose work ensures the flow of information and ideas that are the lifeblood of free and open societies. Today we also reflect on the tremendous sacrifices made by so many journalists in fulfilling this noble calling.
Far too many governments use repression to silence free speech, including by targeting journalists for simply doing their job. We again call on the Russian authorities for their immediate release Wall Street Journal Reporter Evan Gershkovich and all other journalists charged with exercising the right to freedom of expression.
Incarceration isn’t the only threat reporters face. Journalists covering violent conflict and corruption face intimidation and kidnapping, often with impunity. Elsewhere, journalists face discrimination, censorship and armed justice systems. Governments around the world have used various repressive tools to force media outlets to shut down.
On this World Press Freedom Day, we renew our dedication to protecting press freedom at home and promoting it around the world
