Matching this Yorkshire hotel’s award-winning wine list and sommelier service, The Devonshire Arms Hotel will present a trio of wine events in its 3AA Rosette-awarded ‘Burlington’ restaurant next season.

Each is hosted by John Atkinson, Master of Wines since 1999, whose passion for wines and academic advancement in the subject have led him to work on both sides of the channel as both a distributor and producer. During his career, John has collaborated with some of the industry’s most influential characters, including Paul Draper, Charles Rousseau, Alvaro Espinosa and Francois Billecart, and has been awarded the Bollinger Tasting Medal for “blind tasting excellence.”

The three gourmet wine events held at The Devonshire Arms will each take guests on a sensory deep dive into a particular wine region or country, starting May 8 with the best of Burgundy, where five notable wines will be presented by John, together with with a five-course tasting menu curated by the chef to complement the selection.

The dinners promise to be both informative and convivial, an opportunity to share and discover with fellow oenophiles, and to learn more about the region’s master producers, terroir and varietals. Each wine is carefully chosen to pair with delicious seasonal dishes on the tasting menu, creating a satisfying and potentially thought-provoking evening for those who enjoy dining out and are particularly passionate about fine wines.

The Burgundy classic region is known for both the white and red varieties, which can age quite spectacularly, and John’s carefully curated selection will each be at their optimum stage of ripening.

For connoisseurs attending this event, there is the opportunity to taste Mitjavile’s Roc de Cambes against the Tertre Rôteboeuf. The latter is of a larger appellation, but the former often overtakes in quality with additional bottle aging. Château Leoville Poyferré, John reckons, is perhaps the most refined wine from the St Julien AC which should make for an interesting contrast to Château Clerc Milon – the event is likely to provoke lively debate and enhance the palate and broad knowledge of the enthusiast enliven. .

This exclusive series of events is available to a limited number of guests to ensure a high level of personal interaction. After May, there are two more events to enjoy during the fall season. On Thursday, September 5, the now-rare and highly coveted Sylvan Cathiard and Marquis d’Angerville will join the line-up at the Bordeaux wine dinner, not to be outdone by their red counterpart, Javillier’s 2014 Meursault, which would arguably be capable of must be to his own.
