Black History Month 2023 – U.S. Embassy & Consulate in Portugal

As reported by Comunidade Cultura e ArteThe US Embassy Lisbon hosted a public concert at the Teatro da Trindade – one of Lisbon’s most popular venues – with the aim of showcasing music rooted in the African American experience. Under the concert name “L’USA-Fonia”, recognized lusophone musicians performed American gospel, jazz and hip-hop hits, attracting an audience of American music lovers from across Portuguese society.

Devoted to beloved American music, these prominent musicians conveyed a message of cultural unity and shared history that reinforces the value of truth-telling through music.

In the words of President Biden, “Black History Month is more than a celebration. It’s a powerful reminder that black history is American history. Black culture is American culture. Black stories are essentially a continuous history of America.”

Following the concert, in continuation of support for the U.S. Department of State’s efforts to raise awareness and build on conversations about diversity, cultural heritage and national identity, Ambassador Levine hosted a reception at Casa Carlucci on February 22 to commemorate Black History Month, the Residence of the US Ambassador in Lisbon. We celebrated Black History Month together and there was even a gospel music event by Gospel Collective, which was a surprise for the guests!

As we continue to demonstrate America’s commitment to inclusion and advance Portugal’s efforts towards inclusion, watch a summary of the reception in this photo album.
