Statement by National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan welcoming the Aqaba meeting and communiqué
FEBRUARY 26, 2023
We welcome the meeting between senior officials of Israel, the Palestinian Authority (PA), Jordan, Egypt and the United States, held today in Aqaba, Jordan. This was the first such meeting in years and led to the Aqaba Communiqué, in which the Government of Israel and the PA pledged to de-escalate and prevent further violence. The two sides also reaffirmed their commitment to all previous agreements between them and to a just and lasting peace. We recognize that this meeting was a starting point and that much remains to be done in the coming weeks and months to build a stable and prosperous future for Israelis and Palestinians alike. Implementation will be crucial.
The President thanks His Majesty King Abdullah II personally for convening this historic meeting and for President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi’s personal efforts over the past few weeks to create the conditions for its success. The United States will continue to actively engage with all parties in this format over the coming weeks, including through a follow-up engagement next month in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
