Russia’s war against Ukraine – a year later

Antony J. Blinken, Secretary of State
A year ago today, President Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine after months of deceiving why Russia had massed troops on Ukraine’s border. Back then, Russian forces illegally invaded Ukraine’s territory to wage a war that has unnecessarily killed tens of thousands of people and injured millions more.
President Putin’s decision has torn families apart, displaced millions from their communities, destroyed homes, schools, hospitals and other civilian infrastructure, exacerbated a global food crisis, destabilized energy markets and undermined international peace and security. This war has destroyed Russia’s international reputation, left Russia weakened and isolated, and decimated its economy. This war is an attempt to wrest territory from Ukraine and thwart its independent, democratic path.
As the President said in Kyiv this week, “One year later, Kyiv stands and Ukraine stands.” Ukraine’s struggle and the determination and resilience of its people have proved an inspiration to the world and show they will not be intimidated . Ukraine’s indomitable will has rallied the world to its cause, with conscientious people around the world uniting behind Ukraine and repeated calls from the halls of the UN for Russia to end its war of choice.
President Putin started this illegal war and he has the power to end it. The United States stands firmly with Ukraine in its defense, and we will continue to do so until Ukraine’s sovereignty is respected and the Ukrainian people can enjoy their elected, democratic future in freedom and peace.
