US government launches $39 million family planning and reproductive health program in Egypt

February 21, 2023

Cairo – With a $39 million grant to Pathfinder International, the U.S. government today launched a new initiative in Egypt called OSRA through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) (“Family” in Arabic) providing young Egyptians with information on voluntary family planning and reproductive health options for healthy and sustainable child spacing. Along with Pathfinder International, USAID will work with the Department of Health and Population to implement this vital program.

At the ceremony at the Grand Egyptian Museum, US Charge d’Affaires Ambassador Daniel Rubinstein said, “The US government, through USAID, has invested over $435 million in reproductive health in Egypt over the past 30 years. These efforts, undertaken in close coordination with the Ministry of Health and Population, have reduced fertility rates and improved reproductive health outcomes by providing Egyptian women with information on how to identify dangers to their health during pregnancy in a timely manner to to seek medical assistance. We are proud to work with the Ministry of Health and Population to promote and implement long-term and equitable health solutions for Egyptian women and their families.”

The OSRA program will also build on Egypt’s national family planning program by working with the private sector to expand the adoption and use of digital technology and telemedicine platforms that make family planning and reproductive health services available to traditionally underserved communities. The OSRA program awareness campaign will serve to empower women by promoting healthy family planning discussions where women’s voices are heard.

USAID support for voluntary family planning and reproductive health activities is part of the $30 billion the American people has invested in Egypt’s economic development since 1978.
