Disney’s “Ant-Man” peaks at the box office with a starting value of $104 million, becoming the first major film to be released in 2023
Walt Disney Co Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania generated $104 million in ticket sales in the first three days of its opening weekend, making it the first major film release of the year.
The superhero film from the company’s Marvel unit beat projections, which Disney had estimated at $95 million at the start of the weekend. BoxofficePro valued the opening at $103 million. The film grossed $225 million worldwide, Disney said in a statement Sunday.
The third part of the Ant-Man series, Quantumania provided the highest opening of the three. The previous pictures each grossed $57.2 million on their domestic debuts in 2015 and $75.8 million in 2018.
The latest film, which kicks off a fifth phase for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stars returning stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas. Reviews from critics were mostly poor, according to Rotten Tomatoes, and many felt the dialogue and plot lacked suspense. The audience rated it higher.
Playing the title character, Rudd wears a supersuit that gives him the ability to shrink or grow, giving him extra strength.
Disney’s Avatar: The Way of Water, which debuted in December, dominated the box office in early 2023. Hollywood studios largely held back in January and the first half of February. March brings new rates of Shazam!, Believe And Scream Franchise.
