Mark Zuckerberg announces subscription service Meta Verified for Facebook and Instagram, following Elon Musk’s Twitter Blue
Mark Zuckerberg said this weekend that Meta is rolling out paid verification for Facebook and Instagram. In posts on each platform Sunday, Meta’s CEO explained that Meta Verified’s subscription service will have a monthly fee of $11.99 on web or $14.99 per month on mobile.
The service is primarily aimed at content creators, who will gain greater reach and visibility at a time when it’s harder to stand out on Meta’s platforms.
Zuckerberg described Meta Verified as a “subscription service that lets you verify your account with a government ID, get a blue badge, get added identity protection against accounts impersonating you, and get direct access to customer support.”
“This new feature is all about increasing the authenticity and security of our services,” he added.
The service will launch in Australia and New Zealand this weekend and then roll out to other countries.
Meta added that it will not make any changes to accounts verified against its previous requirements, which include authenticity and notoriety.
Meta Verified is similar to the Twitter Blue service that Twitter launched in December after Elon Musk’s messy takeover of the social network. This service, which was slow to gain momentum, had to be halted and then restarted with some tweaks after trolls used it to impersonate brands and celebrities, causing trouble for drugmaker Eli Lilly and others.
