Jiyai Shin wins the women’s Vic Open title

Former world No. 1 Jiyai Shin mowed down rising Aussie star Cassie Porter to earn a five-shot win at the women’s Vic Open at 13th Beach.

Porter, 20, had led after each of the first three laps but was unable to join the South Korean superstar on Sunday.

Porter’s overnight two-stroke advantage was gone within the first two holes, which included a bogey for the Australian on the 1st and a birdie for Shin on the 2nd.

It should be a portent of what was to come.

Shin eventually signed for one under 71 and a total of 14 under 275 over four rounds.

The two-time British Open champion became the fourth major winner to join a celebrated Vic Open honors tally since the women’s event became a 72-hole event in 2013.

Porter bogeyed the last to sign for a seven-over-79 and slipped all the way back to a tie for fourth place with American Emma Talley at eight-under.

They were a shot behind Australia’s Grace Kim and Thailand’s Pavarisa Yoktuan, who tied for second.

Australia’s LPGA Tour regular Su Oh had by far the best lap of the day, a superb five-under-67 race in tricky windy conditions to work his way up to sixth place.
