Avatar: The Way of Water hits $1 billion in global sales in just two weeks
Avatar: The Way of Water has surpassed $1 billion in global ticket sales after two weeks in theaters, Walt Disney Co.
The film reached the sales milestone faster than Top Gun: Maverickby Paramount Global and Jurassic World: Dominion, by Comcast Corp.’s Universal, are the only other 2022 films to have sold $1 billion in tickets. It’s the fastest thing a movie has done since Spider-Man: No Way Home a year ago, according to a statement from Disney on Wednesday.
The way of the water is one of the most expensive films of all time and will likely need to maintain a strong sales pace to break even. Director James Cameron said it needs to take in $2 billion in ticket sales to make money. The first avatar made nearly $3 billion at the worldwide box office.
The sequel has surpassed $300 million in sales in the United States and Canada, Disney said. Earlier this week, the Burbank, Calif.-based company announced that the film had generated $95.5 million in long weekend ticket sales in those markets alone, beating expectations amid some states’ theater closures due to snowstorms have far surpassed.
The film follows the indigenous humanoid Na’vi race that inhabits a moon called Pandora and the colonization that threatens them. About 78% of reviewers recommend it, according to review site RottenTomatoes.com.
