The Fortune’s Success team shares their New Year’s resolutions for 2023
When the new year approaches wealth‘s Success Desk looks inwards. There are the big and small changes we want to make, inspired by the stories we’ve told and the trends we’ve covered in 2022.
We look forward to that in 2023.
Embrace my community
My 2023 resolution is to be more involved in the different communities in my life—at my son’s school, at work, and in my neighborhood. I want to invest more time to help build these networks and help them thrive. I find I’m happiest when I’m interacting and connecting with people, and that’s been something that’s been so difficult during the pandemic. I will not hesitate to arrange a coffee, plan an event or do the performance.

Break up with Chipotle
One of my goals for the coming year is to order less takeout. I love Chipotle, but Chipotle doesn’t love me – or my wallet. I try to save more over the long term, which is difficult in New York City. I’m hoping that if I’m looking for more vegetarian (pasta based) recipes it can be a fun thing to cook more at home, but most importantly something that can help me build more of a rainy day fund as I Cut expenses that don’t really add to my life. I’m sorry, Chipotle.

Plan it out
I’ve written about the importance of having a financial plan throughout my career as a financial and consumer finance reporter. Unfortunately, my own schedule is outdated. So in 2023, I want to take the time to create a robust 10-year financial plan — maybe even work with a professional to fine-tune my financial goals.

maximize money
My goal for 2023 is to become more financially literate! The resources are out there, but I’ve been behind the curve for years because I feel like I don’t even know what I don’t know. But we’ll get there! I opened a Roth IRA this year and bought my first government bond. Hoping to continue gaining momentum!

Find the right balance
My goal for 2023 is to position myself to hold onto and enjoy a happiness that I’ve long wanted but thought impossible – I want to write a book. I’ve always romanticized the idea of the starving artist, but I’m not keen on actually going hungry. I want to make sure I have the money and work-life balance I need to allow myself to have the life I want.

focus on growth
I’m not a fan of resolutions, so I fall into the camp of people who choose a word for the year to define their intentions. I’ve focused on that for the past year Flow– a kind of reset to find a better life balance and try to take on challenges with less stress and anxiety. Now I’m ready grow in 2023, from maintaining my career presence to building my savings after an expensive year of backlogged weddings and setting up a new apartment.

Save, save, save
I plan to cut my spending (finally) and start saving for a house. It’s something I’ve put off and put off, but I believe I’m finally in a position to take serious steps to rescue. I’m interested in trying my own version of a no-buy year to get there…or at least a month or two.
