Each winter, the Hawaiian Islands are graced by the sometimes overwhelming presence of humpback whales migrating from colder waters. If you want to see these majestic creatures up close, a whale watching boat tour is a great way to do it. But which boat should you choose?

Here’s a quick guide to some of the best whale watching boats in Maui.

Redline rafting

These South Maui rafts offer unique whale watching opportunities due to their low profile. If you are “ambushed” by whales, you can be literally inches away from them! The crew is knowledgeable and friendly, making this an ideal tour for families or first-timers. Plus, they depart from Kihei Boat Ramp, which is more convenient than Maalaea for South Maui visitors.

This classic sailboat has a spacious deck that offers plenty of room to view whales, dolphins, sea turtles and other marine life. The crew is passionate about sustainability and is committed to minimizing their impact on the environment. They also offer educational programs on ocean conservation during their travels.

Pacific Whale Foundation Eco-Adventures

This non-profit organization organizes whale watching tours aboard two vessels in particular: a 20-meter catamaran and a 12-meter luxury motor yacht. Both offer panoramic views from the main deck and provide educational information about marine life through an onboard naturalist guide.

Kai Kanani sailing charters

For those looking for something more intimate, Kai Kanani is perfect – it carries a minimum of passengers on its stable sailing catamaran. This gives everyone excellent viewing spots on the bow of the boat or right next to the captain at all times! In addition, they provide snacks and drinks during each tour. You’ll also love the beach access at Maluaka Beach: get ready to get wet!

Whichever option you choose, whale watching in Maui can be an amazing experience! With so many options available, it’s easy to find a boat that fits your needs – whether you’re looking for something luxurious or intimate or something in between! So grab your family or friends and get ready for an unforgettable open water adventure!

Hawaii Ocean Project

The Maui Princess offers a luxurious way to observe whales up close. This boat has comfortable seats and large observation decks with enough space for everyone on board, so you can better see the majestic creatures swimming around you. And if that wasn’t enough, there are also snacks, refreshing drinks and expert stories. They also depart from the Lahaina Port, which is convenient for anyone staying on the west side of Maui.

Some fun facts about the humpback whale:

  1. Humpback whales are large marine mammals that belong to the baleen whale family and are known for their long pectoral fins, knobby heads, and spectacular singing voices.
  2. Males grow to about 15 to 18 meters in length, while females can reach nearly 22 meters in length, weighing 25 to 45 tons.
  3. Humpback whales are found in all the world’s oceans, but seasonally migrate between cold-water feeding areas and warmer breeding and calving areas (the islands that make up Maui County attract them because of the shallow basin).
  4. They feed on krill, plankton and small schools of fish such as anchovies and herring which they filter through the baleen plates in their huge mouths (but only when in colder water).
  5. These whales are known to work together in groups when hunting for food, using techniques such as bubble netting or breaking out of the water to herd prey into a tight ball for easier consumption by the group members.
  6. Humpback whales communicate with each other in complex songs that can last up to twenty minutes at a time; these songs travel long distances underwater, and scientists believe they could be used to attract mates or mark territory during breeding season. It’s still unclear exactly why they sing, but we know that the song changes every season.
  7. During migration periods, they often travel in groups of up to twelve individuals, consisting of mothers with their calves, males wishing to mate, or younger animals traveling alone; occasionally, humpback whales will form larger superpods during migrations that span several miles of ocean shoreline at a time.
  8. The lifespan of humpback whales is estimated to be about 50 years and some live to be over 80; if not touched by humans, they may be able to live even longer, although this has not yet been proven due to our inability to accurately measure such things in wild animals that spend their entire lifespan in the depths of the ocean.
  9. Some unique physical adaptations allow them to survive in harsher environments, including a thick layer of blubber under their skin that helps them stay warm and insulated from both temperature extremes and predators such as killer whales; in addition, humpback whales have unique grooves in their throats called ventral folds that allow them to expand their mouths when ingesting large amounts of food or air as they dive deep into the watery depths below the surface waves where much of their prey resides and where they hiding from sight until disturbed by these curious beasts who taste the salty sea air above them on every dive and dive of the day hunting for sustenance or leisurely swim across open seas with no destination other than perhaps just being present in the wildest domain of nature where these creatures belong!
