Saint Catherine, often spelled St. Katrine, is a city in the South Sinai Governorate of Egypt. It is located at an elevation of 1,586 meters (5,203 feet) on the edge of the El Tor Mountains, 120 kilometers (75 miles) from Nuweiba, and at the foot of Mount Sinai and Saint Catherine’s Monastery. In 1994 it had 4,603 inhabitants. The Saint Catherine region was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.

Saint Catherine weather

According to the Köppen-Geiger climate classification system, it has a desert climate (BWk). It has the coldest nights of all cities in Egypt. It has very low humidity. The city is surrounded by Egypt’s highest mountain ranges and other smaller valleys connect the basin to the highlands in all directions. The municipality is 1,600 meters above sea level (5,200 feet).

The average temperatures of the city of Saint Catherine are reported by many sources. The city’s elevated position and surrounding high mountain ranges create a comfortable atmosphere with cool summer evenings and fantastic spring weather. While winter days in the region are mostly calm, the region can occasionally experience frigid nights, necessitating occasional heating of buildings and public areas. Along with Nekhel and numerous other locations, particularly in mountainous Sinai, Saint Catherine is considered one of the coldest cities in Egypt. Saint Catherine occasionally experiences snowfall in December, January and February. However, snow has fallen in early spring and late fall.

Monastery of Saint Catherine

There are numerous churches, monasteries and holy sites nearby, as well as being within easy reach of the Monastery of St. Catherine, Mount Sinai and Jebel Safsafa, among other popular religious sites.

Christians believe that the chapel of St. Catherine is located at the top of Mount Katherine, where angels are said to have placed the body of the Alexandrian saint. The saint, who was murdered for her conversion to Christianity, was born Dorothea in AD 294 and was educated in pagan institutions. Her body disappeared, but three centuries later, monks led by a dream discovered it on a mountain. It was transported down and buried in the monastery known as the Monastery of St. Catherine in the 11th century.

Since its foundation in the fourth century to the present day, the Monastery of St. Catherine has been a working monastery. After the Vatican, it is home to one of the most revered and essential libraries in history. The region, which has religious significance to Jews, Muslims and Christians, attracts about 100,000 tourists annually, with more expected each year. Even though the battle to limit access and visiting hours hasn’t done much to protect the monastery, it has shielded it from political turbulence.

Saint Catherine hiking trails and hiking in Sinai

One of the best things to do in Egypt is hiking, especially in the Sinai and the climb of Saint Catherine. The area is a national park, home to Mount Moses, the highest mountain in Egypt, St. Catherine Monastery, and Wadi El Arbeen. A road connects Catherine, a small Bedouin settlement sandwiched between two mountains, to the Nweuiba, Taba and Sharm El Shekih roads. With over 7 popular trails and many more off the beaten track locations, Saint Catherine is home to the best hiking trails in Egypt.

Since St. Catherine Hike is the highest point in Egypt, it is always the first thing to reach when hiking there. Mount Moses, Mount Abbas, Red Mountain and El Gelt Al Azraq are then reached. Inside the monastery there is a mosque, a monastery and a story about Moses. Even the routes leading to the mountain tops are beautiful. Most trails are rivers with dried water (mamarat seil).

It is critical to walk in a Jalabeya when you are new to walking to maintain proper step size and achieve greater endurance. Even in hot weather, you should cover your entire body with light-colored clothing to keep the air flowing and act as your own personal air conditioner.

The best headgear is straw, as it allows your head to breathe while protecting your skin from intense sunlight.

During the first few hours of your journey, it is crucial to choose a slow ascending slope so that you can warm up your body and muscles before climbing to the top of the mountain. Do not immediately start descending the steep slopes. Sleep for at least 8 hours before your walk. Even if you are not thirsty, drink. Your body needs enough water to function, but the breeze may make you feel like you don’t want to drink. It is actually more pleasant to sleep on stones than on a mattress.
