Exodus travels through Chile

We joined our trusty local travel expert Alex in Santiago, Chile for 12 days exploring the country’s most iconic sights. Our Exodus Travels Tour was divided into four parts. The urban region of Santiago de Chile and Valparaiso, the Atacama Desert, the Lake District and Patagonia in Chile.

On the first official day of the trip, we joined Alex on a full-day tour of Santiago that took us to the best viewpoint and stopped at all the major tourist attractions in the old city. We stayed in the modern center and had the best of both worlds to see everything.

Stop 1 – Santiago and Valparaiso

If you’re doing an Exodus Travels tour, we recommend arriving a day or two early to relax and take in the sights. Dave and I enjoyed two days in town before the rest of our group arrived and felt relaxed and ready to hit the road when we joined the group. We soon learned that once the journey started, we were on a non-stop itinerary flying from one great adventure to the next.

Stop 2 – The Atacama Desert

Our tour included 5 flights all over Chile with our first flight taking us to the Atacama Desert. We stayed in the heart of San Pedro de Atacama where we spent three days seeing the top attractions. This huge salt lake is one of the best places to visit in Chile with incredible natural attractions including the El Tatio Geysers, Miscanti Lagoon and Miñiques Lagoon, and the flamingos of Chaxa Lagoon.

Stop 3 – Lake District

It was then on another flight connecting via Santiago to explore Chile’s Lake District where we stayed in the charming town of Puerto Varas.

We climbed the Osorno Volcano, took a boat trip on Lago Todos and witnessed the thundering waterfalls of Petrohue. It was also where we had our best llama encounter with llamas posting with the snow capped volcano creating a beautiful scene.

We had evenings off to enjoy the area’s fresh seafood and peruse the shops of Puerto Varas. Our hotel was downtown, which gave us the opportunity to walk along the waterfront and take advantage of the restaurants and nightlife.

Stop 4 – Stop Patagonia

The last fifteen minutes of our journey took us to Chile’s stretch of resistance, Patagonia. We flew to the very south of the country and headed to Torres del Paine National Park for three fun filled adventure days.

Our skilled driver spotted the elusive cougar on day one. These animals are rare in Torres del Paine, but we saw a group of three cougars walking right along the road. That moment sets the tone for an unforgettable trip to Patagonia.

We viewed the impressive horns of Torres del Paine and the equally impressive Torres del Paine massif. In order not to miss anything, we visited the Southern Patagonia ice field and went by catamaran to the Gray Glacier to see the huge wall up close.

It was then on a beautiful waterfall and the ancient Miloden cave. There was the perfect mix of nature and history.

We stayed just outside the park on a lake, had an incredible view of the mountains during sunset and slept like babies in our private cabins. This was truly our bucket list adventure.

Connection with the group

During our two week adventure, we had opportunities for group meals in fine restaurants, cocktails with a view, and breakfasts in nature. There were so many unique experiences we shared together that will be etched in our memories for years to come.
