The Spanish Embassy in Egypt celebrates World Heritage Day by holding a public exhibition around the embassy’s perimeter on Ismail Mohamed Street in Zamalek until November 30.
The exhibition contains pictures of some Spanish cities that have been included in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) list of World Heritage Sites, including, for example, the cities of Alcala de Henares, Avila, Baeza, Cáceres, Ibiza, Merida, Salamanca, Toledo, and Ubeda. In addition, QR codes will be available to help passers-by and visitors who will be stopped by the exhibition to obtain more information about all Spanish cities included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The aim of World Heritage Day is to celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the Convention entrusted with the protection of the cultural and natural heritage of humanity signed in Paris, on November 16, 1972. Some 1154 sites from 167 countries around the world were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, which is divided into three sections: cultural heritage, and natural heritage. , and mixed heritage.
Currently, Spain has 49 UNESCO-listed sites – which are protected and specially preserved – of which 43 are registered as Cultural Heritage, four are registered as Natural Heritage, and two are registered under the Mixed Heritage section. Thus, Spain joins other countries in the task of protecting and preserving the richness of cultural, natural and intangible heritage around the world.
