The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) provides advice on travel risks to help UK nationals make informed decisions. Learn more about FCDO Travel tips.

Temporary closure of Buccoo Reef Marine Park

Following a shark attack on a tourist at Turtle Beach/Courland Bay on April 26, 2024, Tobago authorities have temporarily closed Buccoo Reef Marine Park (BRMP) until further notice. This closure is effective immediately and applies to all recreational activities, including snorkeling, diving, glass bottom boat tours and all other water activities within park boundaries. Tobago authorities strongly advise all beachgoers, fishermen and sailors to exercise extreme caution when operating in the coastal areas around Plymouth, Courland Bay, Black Rock, Mt Irvine, Buccoo, Pigeon Point, Store Bay and all areas in between. You should check and follow the advice of local authorities.

Before you travel

No trip can be guaranteed to be safe. Read all the advice in this guide and check out Support for British Nationals Abroad for information on specific travel topics.
