Spain’s Participation in Aswan International Women’s Film Festival

The eighth edition of the Aswan International Women’s Film Festival (AIWFF) is set to take place in southern Egypt from April 20th to 25th. In this edition, Spain will participate in the official competition for feature films with the Spanish-Argentinian film “Alemania” by Maria Zanetti. Additionally, Spain will compete in the short film competition with “Colorado,” directed by Sandra Gajigo and Belar Gometh, and “Si me querei, irse,” directed by Sofia Monyouth.

Director and screenwriter of the film “Colorado,” Belar Gometh Lozano, will attend the festival’s opening as a guest, supported by the Spanish Embassy in Cairo. She will engage with Egyptian filmmakers and participate in activities organized by the festival during this period.

“Colorado,” directed by Sandra Gajigo and Belar Gometh, is a short film released in 2023, delving into the personal circumstances of a 74-year-old woman named Carmen (played by Mariana Cordero). These circumstances compel her to meet an old friend named Angelis (played by Enriqueta Carvajal), whom she hasn’t seen in 30 years. Through this encounter, the complexities and complicity in this friendship are unveiled.

Belar Gometh is a talented actress, screenwriter, and director who has made her mark in the entertainment world, winning several acting awards (including the 2018 Max Award for Best Performance). Her works as a screenwriter and director include the documentary film “Mirarse el ombligo,” co-directed with Ana Albarith Osorio, as well as the short films “La loca y el Feminista” and “Colorado,” co-directed with Sandra Gajigo.

The Aswan International Women’s Film Festival was founded in 2017 as the first annual Egyptian film festival focusing on women’s-related cinematic works, celebrating their success stories, and supporting female filmmakers in Egypt, the Middle East, and North Africa. Additionally, AIWFF is the first festival to offer a specialized program of film workshops for youth in the region, providing educational opportunities and necessary skill acquisition in the field of cinema under the supervision of top industry professionals.
