His Excellency Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, and His Excellency Stéphane Séjourné, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the French Republic, met on Monday, March 25, 2024 at the State House in Georgetown.
They took this opportunity to exchange views on several priority issues of interest to the international community.
Both France and Guyana are committed to democratic values and respect for international law. They both actively participate in peacekeeping initiatives.
They are keen to strengthen cooperation to ensure the security and stability of the Guyana Plateau and to combat organized crime in the region. They have also committed to measures to combat climate change and protect the Amazon, which are priorities for both countries given their ties to the region.
Keen to strengthen their relations as neighbors and friendly countries, Guyana and France have decided to write a new chapter in their history by opening a French embassy in Georgetown in 2025. France will be the first country in the EU to establish a diplomatic representation of these countries. level in Guyana.
The opening of a French Embassy will boost cooperation in various sectors, especially the economy, in priority areas for Guyana in which French companies have recognized expertise.
This embassy will also contribute to strengthening ties between Guyana and French Guiana, as well as France’s relations with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), headquartered in Georgetown.
