The Soul of Black History Month
The US Embassy, Lisbon City Council and Teatro São Luiz/EGEAC celebrate Black History Month with a free concert
February 27th – 7pm – Teatro São Luiz, Lisbon
On February 27, the US Embassy, Lisbon City Council and Teatro São Luiz/EGEAC invite the public to the concert “L’USAfonia – The Soul of Black History Month”.
Curated by João Leandro, Ricardo José Lopes and Selma Uamusse, this is the second edition of the event, which features renowned African-American Lusophone musicians such as: Alex d’Alva Teixeira, Amaura, Anastacia Carvalho, Djodje Almeida, Gabe, Gospel collective, Heber Marques, Karyna Gomes, Matay, Mirza Lauchand, Nayr Faquira, NBC, Orlando Guilande, Raissa, Selma Uamusse, Soraia MoraisAnd Vicente Augustoperform some of the most famous songs to come from the African American communities of the ’60s and ’70s.
This program is part of the U.S. Department of State’s Global Music Diplomacy Initiative, which, in conjunction with the celebration of Black History Month, uses the power of music to build connection, peace and mutual understanding among all people. American jazz legend Laurin Talese will appear on behalf of the Art envoy And Global Music Diplomacy Initiative programs.
In the words of Ambassador Randi Charno Levine, “February is dedicated to the annual commemoration of the achievements of African Americans and a time to recognize their central role in U.S. history.” African American music has always been a vehicle for addressing difficult truths . The U.S. Embassy and I are pleased that these talented Portuguese-speaking musicians want to join us in celebrating Black History Month.”
Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas emphasizes: “It is with great satisfaction that the Lisbon City Council participates in this very important celebration that honors the African-American generations and gives visibility and meaning to their achievements in the history of the United States.” We are also very proud to the diverse communities of African descent that contribute so much to the strength of Lusophone culture. It is therefore an honor for Lisbon to be able to use this initiative to strengthen the intercultural bridges between Portugal and the USA and to remind us of our strong friendly relations.”
Free tickets will be available to the public from 3pm on the 27th and can be picked up from us Sao Luiz Theater Box office (maximum two tickets per person). Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
